The Four Laws of Productivity
The First Law
of Productivity: “Individual productivity
is limited to the least among: (1), the capacity of the individual; (2), the
availability of relevant information and instructions; and (3), the ability of
the Input / Output Channel to deliver required materials and absorb the work
product.
The
Second Law of Productivity: The productivity of the Organization is limited to the sum of the least
elements of Capacity, Information and Instruction, and Input/output channel for
each individual.
The Third Law of
Productivity: “High productivity requires balance between the three elements of
Capacity, Information and Instructions and Input/output channel for each
task."
The Fourth Law
of Productivity: “The most
productive environment is one that combines the balance between capacity,
information and instructions, and the input/output channel with a sense of
community.”
The buttons at the left lead to the text of 12 chapters which develop and explain the Four Laws of Productivity. The four laws are rooted in the work of Gene Amdahl and his "Amdahl's Laws" of Computing. He stated his "laws" when describing what was required for parallel processor computers to be cost effective. The adaptation grew from an effort to understand how a number of simple and inexpensive processors in a parallel structure could do the work of a very complicated and high priced processor with a hierarchical structure. The similarity to performing work in a corporate hierarchical structures was obvious.
Understanding and applying these simple principles can accelerate the level of productivity of any organization. What I found out led me to a corporate structure for the future which I call the "Parallel Corporation". It is what I believe to be the end game of corporate evolution over the past 100 years. Read this and The Parallel Corporation and you will ask yourself "Why didn't I recognize this sooner."
